first_imgNew Delhi, Nov 19 (PTI) Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore today said BCCI could have ensured dope testing of the Indian cricketers by NADA but put the onus on WADA to make the Indian Board compliant of its Code.Rathore made the comments when he was asked about the BCCIs strong response that National Anti-Doping Agency has no jurisdiction to conduct dopes tests on Indian cricketers.”I am glad that cricket is getting dope control done through an outside agency. But when the entire sports bodies of the country and also of some other countries are trusting our National Anti-Doping Agency, the cricketers can also do that,” Rathore said.”However, we leave it to the World Anti-Doping Agency, it is their prerogative. As the ICC is registered under the WADA, they have to abide by the doping standards. So, it is upto the WADA to ensure that they can dope test the cricketers,” he told reporters at the sidelines of the Delhi Half Marathon. The minister said the question of the dope-testing of Indian cricketers can be sorted out.”We dont have any issues with that (issue) specifically, we have many more sports to take care of and we are proud of all the sports,” he said.In a stern response to National Anti-Doping Agency, the BCCI had said that government body has no jurisdiction to conduct dopes tests on Indian cricketers. In a letter written on November 8 to NADA chief Navin Agarwal, BCCI CEO Rahul Johri had made it clear that there is no requirement for NADA to tests its cricketers since the board is not a National Sports Federation and its present anti-doping system is robust enough.advertisementTalking generally about doping in sports, Rathore said, “For us three things are very important, players, coaches and the fans. When doping happens, the fans are cheated. So every organisation need to ensure that there is no cheating in their sport and cricket is no exception.”Rathore was also asked about two-time Olympic-medallist and comeback man Sushil Kumar, who won a gold in mens 74kg freestyle competition of the National Wrestling Championship after three rivals gave him a walk over, but the minister said the issue was not in his domain.”Everyone has the right to come back to the sport and especially Sushil has given so much to the sport. The way the events are conducted is not in my domain,” he said.”There is a federation for it that takes care of it. I am sure the federation is well aware and very fair and equal to all.” PTI PDS ATK ATKlast_img

Goa Cong. protests Cabinet meet at AIIMS

first_imgAddressing a press conference at its party headquarters, Goa Congress chief Girish Chodankar on Saturday said the BJP is forced to continue with Manohar Parrikar as Chief Minister because he is privy to many details about the Rafale deal. The Congress party objected to a cabinet meeting of the Goa government that took place last Friday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), in Delhi where Mr. Parrikar is under treatment and claimed that there is a constitutional breakdown in Goa.For a full time CMMr Chodankar said either the BJP should appoint a full time Chief Minister or take a floor test to prove its majority.“I don’t have any doubt in my mind that that Manohar Parrikar ji was the Defence Minister when the Rafale deal was struck. As the Defence Minister, many files were with him, many documents were with him. We have no doubt that the moment the Prime Minister or the BJP President pressurises him or tries to remove him, Manohar Parrikar will not keep quiet. He will reveal all these information which can expose our Prime Minister,” the Goa Congress chief told reporters. He said though the Congress party wishes a speedy recovery to Mr Parrikar, governance in the State has been paralysed for nine months. “They [BJP] had sent one team to Goa about 15 days back and they had promised to the people of Goa a new Chief Minister. Lokpal Bill: Congress takes the fight to civil society camp

first_imgPushed to a corner, the Congress has now decided to come out fighting against Team Anna. The party has decided to adopt a tough stand against the civil society members and has advised the government to draft only one Lokpal Bill and then hold a series of discussions in the cabinet, the Parliament, the standing committee and with other political parties. The shift comes in the wake of growing endorsement of its view from leaders such as Mayawati, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Lalu Prasad, among others. The UPA allies – NCP, DMK and Trinamool Congress – too have asked the party to take a stern stand against the civil society members saying “pandering to them beyond a point is dangerous to parliamentary democracy”, a source said.Hours after Anna Hazare threatened to go on another fast, AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh and HRD minister Kapil Sibal had a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh where he is understood to have discussed the issues. It is believed that Congress leaders have advised the PM that there is no need to capitulate before a bunch of “self-styled” civil society members.Digvijay, who claimed the meeting was a routine affair, said the government should prepare one report. Asked about the differences between Team Anna and the government, he said: “There can be unanimity on many provisions. You can give two or three options. Intentions of both sides should not be suspected.”The government has an open mind but the civil society members should also understand that there is a Parliament that frames rules. All their concerns could be discussed by the Parliament, standing committee and political parties.” Being pushed to the wall till recently, the party now feels that while the government has walked the extra mile to engage them, the civil society members themselves have exposed their “political leanings”. “If they insist that only their draft should be adopted, it is not democratic,” AICC spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said.advertisementThe party is crafting a two-pronged strategy to deal with what it calls a campaign by ” a section of civil society propped up the BJP- RSS combine” to destabilise the UPA government. While the Centre will try to counter Team Anna through legal, parliamentary and Constitutional means, the party will launch a nationwide campaign to create awareness about the steps taken by the government on various graft cases even as the BJP continues to “shield” its corrupt CMs.For more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img
