“There are plus points for take off for short term and long term. There is an ideal platform,” he said.A team of investors will be visiting Kerala in August to hold talks with Chamber of Commerce and captains of industry. The Sri Lankan High Commissioner called on the Governor, P. Sathasivam; Chief Minister Oommen Chandy; and Ministers P.K. Kunhalikutty, A.P. Anil Kumar, Anoop Jacob, and Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan; and held discussions. Seneviratne, who is on a four-day visit to Kerala to foster ties between Kerala and Sri Lanka on various sectors, including tourism, said the fishermen issue was a human, economic, and social problem and the two governments were sorting it. The poor fishermen would be affected if the ecosystem was destroyed by trawlers. Both the governments were aware of the security issues and chances of drugs and arms smuggling, he said. “India and Sri Lanka need to guard themselves. A mutual interest and understanding is needed. We have to support India for safeguarding us and India should do vice-versa,” the High Commissioner said. Seneviratne said “we do not want others to come and advice us. We are a historical society for 100 years. We can resolve issues through discussions.”Stating that Kerala has a high priority for Sri Lanka, the High Commissioner said they were working for new initiatives and there were “good vibrations.” India and Sri Lanka are still sorting the fishermen issue, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India Sudharshan Seneviratne has said.He also said that countries making their presence in the Indian Ocean should respect the geographical reality, individuality, and security of the nations in the region, The Hindu newspaper reported.

Hitmen confess to killing Berbice woman

first_img… lead Police to couple who hired themRembers of the Major Crime Unit (MCU) of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) have again come in for high praise after acquiring a confession from two men who were paid to execute Lilawatie Muhammed, a domestic worker, in her Tain SettlementDead: Lilawatie Muhammed, Berbice home on Wednesday last. This was confirmed by Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, who said that a tattoo artist and a Jamaican are in Police custody, along with the couple who contracted them to carry out the job.He noted that the Police are now hunting for the wife of a businessman, who is the alleged mastermind behind the execution of the mother of four. The Police are also looking for a taxi driver, who transported the hitmen to and from the scene.Blanhum told Guyana Times that the tattoo artist was arrested on Friday after the Police received several leads. After his arrested and interrogation, the couple who contacted him to commit the execution was also arrested, as well as the Jamaican. He explained that from all indications, the now dead woman was having an affair with a businessman in the area and his wife later learnt about the relationship. In retaliation, she contacted the couple – a man and wife – and asked them to hire someone competent enough to kill the woman, claiming that Muhammed was causing marital problems in her home. The wife, Guyana Times understands, paid a substantial amount of money to the couple in order to get the job done.In turn, the couple contacted the tattoo artist and offered an undisclosed sum of money to him. After taking up the job, he contacted the Jamaican and the execution was planned. On the night of the shooting incident, the two men hired a Toyota 212 motor car and travelled to the woman’s house at about 23:00h as her children were asleep. As they arrived at Mohamed’s house, they kicked down the main access door, went into the house and started to demand money, making it look as if it were a robbery. The Jamaica then discharged two rounds hitting Mohamed to the head. As she fell to the ground, the men ensured that the woman was dead before boarding the motor car driven by a man of mixed race and left the scene.Guyana Times was told that one-day after the killing, one of the hitmen went to a popular furniture store in New Amsterdam, Berbice, where he paid his overdue instalment. This publication could not confirm how much money was paid to each of the men.Meanwhile, the Crime Chief noted that efforts to arrest the mastermind and the taxi driver have intensified.last_img

Ireland footballing icon Robbie Keane hangs up boots

first_img0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Ireland football legend and record goalscorer Robbie Keane has brought to a close his 23 year playing career © AFP / PHILIPPE LOPEZDUBLIN, Ireland, Nov 28 – Irish football legend Robbie Keane brought the curtain down on over two decades as a player on Wednesday saying his career had exceeded all his hopes when he was a “football-mad boy growing up in Dublin”.The 38-year-old — his country’s record goalscorer on 68 well clear of Niall Quinn who is next with 21 — is to focus on his new duties as assistant manager to new Ireland handler Mick McCarthy. Keane, who replaces Roy Keane (no relation) in the role after the latter and manager Martin O’Neill were fired last week, captained Ireland for a decade.“Today, after 23 wonderful years, I am formally announcing my retirement as a professional footballer,” Keane said in a statement.“From Crumlin United around the world to the likes of Milan, London and Los Angeles, I could never have imagined the path my football life would take.“It has exceeded all the hopes I had as a football-mad boy growing up in Dublin.”Keane, unlike his near namesake, enjoyed good relations with McCarthy in the latter’s first spell in charge of the national side.He was one of their stars at the 2002 World Cup — which infamously saw their one world class player Roy Keane sent home after launching a tirade of abuse at McCarthy — where the Irish went out on penalties in the last 16 to Spain.Keane also enjoyed a highly successful, if peripatetic, club career which ended with a period as player/manager at Indian outfit ATK, in the season that finished in March. In all, Keane scored 126 goals in 349 Premier League matches, 91 of them for Tottenham Hotspur, although he also had spells with Coventry, Leeds United and Liverpool in the elite league.“Leaving home at 15 years of age to pursue my professional career in England seems a lifetime ago now,” said Keane.“I was a street footballer full of hope armed with huge ambitions and a determination to succeed.“All I needed was that one chance.”Keane had especially warm words for his long service to his country on the pitch — winning 146 caps and aside from the 2002 World Cup appearing also in two European Championships.“Playing and captaining my country has been the highlight of my career,” said Keane.“I enjoyed every moment of the most incredible journey with the Ireland team over an 18-year period and as I have said many times before, words cannot express how proud I am to be Irish.”last_img
