Leicester City 2-1 Chelsea: Brilliant Riyad Mahrez gives Claudio Ranieri sweet revenge over Blues

first_img1 Riyad Mahrez dazzled as Leicester beat Chelsea to return to the top of the Premier League and leave Jose Mourinho on the brink of being sacked.Mahrez was a danger from the offset before playing in a delightful cross for Jamie Vardy to give Leicester a first half lead.Immediately after the break Mahrez went from provider to goalscorer when he brilliantly fired in to extend the Foxes’ lead.Loice Remy pulled one back with 15 minutes remaining but it was sweet revenge for Claudio Ranieri, who was replaced as Chelsea manager by Mourinho back in 2004.Leicester sit two points clear at the top of the league while Chelsea hang only one point above the bottom three.Chelsea only had to wait two minutes to see why Mahrez has plagued so many defences this season as he danced into space before firing a low shot at Thibaut Courtois.Eden Hazard had a good opportunity to end his goal drought when he peeled away from the Leicester defence, but his extra touch allowed Danny Simpson to recover and block the shot.Mahrez had another chance as the Blues again failed to close him down but, like his first effort, Courtois was perfectly positioned to deny the Algerian.Hazard limped off after half an hour and things immediately got worse for Mourinho.Mahrez, lurking on the right wing, was given more space and sent in a delicious cross for Vardy to volley past Courtois for his 15th goal of the season.Vardy was booked for a crunching tackle on Diego Costa just after half time as tempers began to boil over at the King Power Stadium. However, Mahrez managed to keep a cool head and on 48 minutes he showed just how cool he was as he showed some quick feet to bamboozle Cesar Azpilicueta before curling in a beautiful left-footer into the top corner to double the Foxes’ lead.Chelsea had their first clear-cut opportunity on the hour mark when Costa was played through, only to be brilliantly denied by Kasper Schmeichel. From the resulting corner, Bransilav Ivanovic missed a golden chance to halve the lead when Willian’s cross reached him at the back post but, two yards out, he completely mishit his volley. After 77 minutes, the Blues did pull one back when Pedro sent in a dangerous cross for substitute Remy to nod in passed a helpless Schmeichel.Chelsea continued to pile forward and fight for their Premier League lives but it was not enough ahead of arguably their most crucial period of festive fixtures in recent seasons.
